Viewers See, Hear Less Than Half the Story of the Governor's Race

Pundits may spin and dispute over who won Michigan's first televised gubernatorial debate Monday night. But the clear losers were the voters and taxpayers of Michigan -- who were denied the chance to learn about three of the five candidates in the race . . . and had to pay for the event, too.

Douglas Campbell, two-time candidate for governor of the Green Party of Michigan (GPMI), was turned away by Michigan Public Broadcasting station WKAR-TV as he went to check in for the debate, which had been touted for its open format. Barred from the public airwaves by a public television station, Campbell spoke instead to the press and crowd outside the studio on his campaign's message of "Peace, Jobs, and Justice".

David Sole, Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate, today filed a Federal Election Commission complaint over his exclusion from the U.S. Senate candidate debate scheduled for October 18 at the Detroit Economic Club.

In a letter requesting inclusion in the debate, Sole stated: "I am running a serious statewide campaign for the U.S. Senate and am on the ballot in Michigan. My campaign is particularly focused on opposition to the U.S. wars and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, in contrast to Michael Bouchard's and Debbie Stabenow's support for these wars. As a result, my campaign reflects the majority position of the people on this critical issue, a position that should be heard and reflected in any true campaign debate."

January 25, 2006, Post-Address Statement by the Green Party of Michigan (After Granholm “State of the State” & Republican Reply)

The people of Michigan know the state of our state. Folks need jobs good enough to sustain a good economy. They yearn for integrity, for deep change in how the system operates . . . and for whom. They want to vote for something more than the lesser of two evils – or the bigger of two corporate tax cuts. Michigan needs a party *of* the people – a party inspired *by* the people – a party working *for* the people.

But a party can’t be *for* real people and working families if it’s parked in the deep pockets of corporations that see human beings as just another kind of profit center. A party can’t be *for* small farmers and consumers if it feeds at the trough of agribusiness and factory-farm special interests. A party can’t be *for* the little people if it’s hooked on big money. A party has to choose sides.

We’re on *your* side. We’re the Green Party of Michigan.
