>> 30 Greens on Michigan Ballot -- and Counting . . . <<
>> ================================================== <<
> Candidates Run from President to Township Trustee; <
> With Seven County Caucuses to Go, May Break Record <

Green not only means go -- this election year, it also means grow.

Last month in Milwaukee, the Green Party of Michigan (GPMI) helped
put David Cobb and Pat LaMarche on ballots across the nation as the
Green ticket for President and Vice President.

That followed GPMI's state convention near Traverse City in May,
when the party nominated 11 candidates for the Michigan ballot . . .
and endorsed two more Greens running for non-partisan offices.

Now, it's only halfway through July, and the Cobb/LaMarche cam-
paign has company from 29 other Green campaigns in Michigan. This
past weekend, local Greens added four more nominees in caucuses for
Genesee and Tuscola Counties, to boost the total to 30. And there
are seven more county caucuses scheduled between now and the August 3
deadline.

Among the Greens' candidates so far are six running for Congress,
four for statewide education-board seats, and five for seats in the
Michigan State House. There are also 11 for county-level offices,
one for city commissioner, one for a countywide community-college
board seat, and one for a trustee in Bay County's Bangor Township.

"We like to think this demonstrates that Green principles and
ideals are clearly present at all levels of the political strata,"
commented GPMI chair Marc Reichardt. "From city council and county
commissioner races to the Presidential race, our message remains the
same -- and it applies to everyone."

Reichardt will be seeking the party's nomination for the 3rd Ward
seat on the Ann Arbor City Council at the city-level caucus held in con-
junction with the Washtenaw County caucus 7pm Wednesday at the Pittsfield
Township meeting room (6201 West Michigan Avenue, Ann Arbor). Keith
Agdanowski will match Reichardt as a candidate for the Ypsilanti City
Council's 3rd Ward seat, and Donald Abdul Roberts

Before that, Charlevoix and Emmet County Greens will caucus Tuesday
starting at 7pm at the Boyne City Library (on Park and Ray). Among the
candidates expected there is current Charlevoix County Drain Commissioner
JoAnne Bier Beemon, who gave a rousing speech at the national convention.

And Greens from Hillsdale, Jackson, and Lenawee Counties will gather
at 1pm Saturday at the Commonwealth Commerce Center in downtown Jackson
(209 E. Washington, on the corner of Francis). Caucus organizer Jason
Seagraves -- who is also the Greens' candidate for Congress in the 7th
District -- has been recruiting candidates from all three counties, and
hopes to raise the party's profile with a good turnout.

The final caucus scheduled will be in Grand Traverse County August 2,
starting at 7pm on the lower level of Horizon Books (243 E. Front St.,
across from the BancOne Building in downtown Traverse City). Traverse Bay
Watershed Greens member Tom Mair is hoping for the GPMI nod to run for
county clerk.

Even just having the expected candidates come out of these seven
caucuses will send GPMI to a new record, notes state party elections
co-ordinator John Anthony La Pietra. The 30 Green candidates already
(counting the Presidential ticket as one) are very close to GPMI's
record crop of 33 in 2002. And more Greens may volunteer -- or be
drafted or recruited -- to run at their caucuses.

But the number of candidates is no surprise to Margaret Guttshall
of Detroit, running for a seat on the Wayne State University Board of
Governors. Rather, it's a close match for the growing majority of
people who "are against Bush-Kerry's policies of unemployment, poverty,
and war. I am glad there will be candidates in Michigan speaking out
against them and for the interests of the majority!"

For more information about GPMI, its platform and public positions
on issues, its candidates for President and Vice President and the 29
other candidates it has already nominated or endorsed for the November
2004 ballot, and the county caucuses where local Greens will nominate
more candidates over the next two weeks, please visit our Web site:
