Greens in Ann Arbor Nominate Three for City Council Race
    =============================================
Largest slate ever for city chapter of Greens

On Monday, August 4, 2003, the City Caucus of the
Washtenaw County Green Party nominated three
candidates for City Council in Ann Arbor. The three
are: Rob Haug, 1st Ward; Scott Trudeau, 4th Ward; and
Adrianna Buonarroti, 5th Ward. This constitutes the
largest slate that the Greens have put together for
City Council since achieving ballot access in 2000.

This is the first run for office for Haug, a
graduate student in the Department of Near Eastern
Studies at U of M. He is one of the leaders of the
U of M Campus Greens and serves as Treasurer of the
local Huron Valley Greens, which is affiliated with
the Green Party of Michigan. Trudeau made a bid for
U of M Regent in 2000, garnering over 108,000 votes,
not enough to win.

Buonarroti ran as Lieutenant Governor to Doug
Campbell's Governor in 2002, crossing the state
repeatedly and proving that the Greens are here to
stay. Buonarroti and Trudeau work together in the
Michigan Poverty Law Office in Ann Arbor.

All three candidates are focusing attention on
Instant Runoff Voting (IRV), a method of counting
votes that ensures that the winner must have a
majority of the votes, and which allows people to rank
their choices, enabling voters to vote their
conscience while eliminating runoff votes and ending
the spoiler issue (see www.fairvote.org for more
details of IRV). Ann Arbor once had IRV, in the 1975
mayoral race that elected Al Wheeler. In addition,
the candidates are variously raising development,
affordable housing, water and transportation issues.

The candidates are available by e-mail: Buonarroti -
, Haug - ,
Trudeau - .

Local Greens can be reached at . U of
M Campus Greens meet at 6:00 and Huron Valley Greens
at 7:00 every 2nd and 4th Monday at the Michigan
League.

The Green Party of Michigan was formed in 1987 to address environmental
issues in Michigan politics. There are Greens organized in all 50 states
and the District of Columbia. Each state Green Party sets its own goals
and creates its own structure, but US Greens agree on Ten Key Values:

        Ecological Wisdom * Grassroots Democracy
        Social Justice * Nonviolence
        Community Economics * Decentralization
