Subject: Fw: [migreens] Summer SQM announcement...
Date: Tue, 3 Jul 2001 13:31:46 -0400
The summer State Quarterly Meeting (SQM)
of the Green Party of Michigan will be held.......
WHERE: Oak Club/Hall....822 Oak St.
just east of downtown Wyandotte, MI.
Sponsored by the Downriver Greens
chapter.
DATE(S): Sat & Sun. August 11th & 12th
(NOT Aug. 4th & 5th...a change)
LOCATION: South of Detroit, between
I-75 and the Detroit River. Oak Hall
is @ 8th & Oak, midway between Northline
& Eureka, east of I-75. Quite a ways east
of Fort St., west of Jefferson/Biddle.....
about 8 blocks east of the waterfront
park.
(Look at the SE Mich. insert on
the Mich. Highway map..... Wyandotte.......
the tracks and Biddle shown.). Lots of high-
way construction in the area. Recently, I took
Southfield Freeway/M-39 south to Fort St.
(M-85), then a short distance south to Oak St.
Turned left....drove east...........
short drive to hit tracks on Oak. Club/Hall..
left/north side of Oak just east of tracks.
Northbound Southfield/M-39 closed......
also use I-94 or I-75 to access/exit area.
Best everyone checks with Mich.Dept.
of Transportation for construction zones
in area before driving down...lots of
detours in the area.
WHAT: Two-day event.. with breakfast and
lunch buffets..and....a probable pizza party/
and get-together on Saturday evening @
the Oak Hall, with entertainment/DJ & re-
freshments. Dancing.
Preliminary starting time..... 9:30 am to
maybe 6 pm on Saturday. Opening time
Sunday, probably the same. Closing....
around 4 pm Sunday.
COST: Still keeping to the $ 10 registration
for the entire weekend. Food, buffets, pizza
will be a bit more...BUT...we're getting a $ 2/
per person deal for ALL refreshments...including
soda and beer, for both days! Offhand, you
should be able to "do" the entire weekend,includ-
ing meeting, food, refreshments, party, dancing,
etc. for around $ 20/pp. Possibly,
the best "deal" around! Lunch & pizza will
feature veggie AND meat items. (No money
required until you check in, on Saturday.). For
those only attending the Sunday session, which
ACCOMMODATIONS: Motels available in/near
I-75 in the area, but none real close to venue......
unfortunately. We're surveying such for a weekend
"deal" price....will forward motel contact information
in the near future. [see listing added below]
Again, venue location can easily
be reached by freeway from a relatively large area;
meeting attendees could feasibly overnight a good
distance from meeting locale, and still access in a
reasonable time. Check with your local motel chains
to determine availablity near Wyandotte.
(Those Greens living in se Michigan may want to
generously offer a place to "crash" for visitors.......
we'll make such available when known)
We'll also schedule beginning times for meetings
a bit later to serve those driving in any distances.
Carpoolers are encouraged, of course.
AGENDA: At least 2/3 or more of the overall
meeting time will be reserved for speakers, open
discussions, networking, outreach, and
"breakout"/group sessions similar to last
SQM in Old Mission Peninsula. Some timely
speakers (grassroots organizing, alternative
voting systems, state/local "offices" etc.) and
a general focus toward "what/ where" the Green
Party will be in latter 2001 and 2002. AND......
growing the party and being a relevant "player" in
upcoming election(s). Important "stuff."
We'll try to get the business items over the first
part of Saturday....then focus on the "more inter-
esting" items.
VENUE DETAILS: The Oak Club/Hall is spacious,
holds a lot more people than previous SQM venue,
has air-conditioning, large parking lot, and lots of
tables and chairs, including large round tables...
ideal for group meetings. Nice place....a well-known
wedding and "party" place in Wyandotte...noted for
serving excellent food. The Club/Hall staff will be
serving us!
Downtown Wyandotte
close by....waterfront park maybe 1/2 mile away.
All members welcomed, of course, along with
others interested in becoming "Green." We're hoping
that local chapters are all represented at this meeting
.... especially the lower Michigan ones. As usual,
wives,husbands, mates, friends, are welcome....not
only the meeting but, especially, for the Saturday night
party. (Dogs? Doubtful, but I'm still checking!)
And...we have lots of wall space.....(and masking
tape)....can use such for putting up Green-related
banners, signs, flyers, etc. Advertise your local
chapter, and anything happening in your area.
BUSINESS ITEMS: In an effort to reform our business
segment(s) in the meeting....we're asking that Green
Party members forward their bylaw(s) proposals, reso-
lution proposals, and any general business items in
advance of the meeting.
PLEASE SEND A HARD COPY OF SUCH..TO ME...
(along with an E-mail....from those having E-mail avail-
ability) no later than July 23rd, 2001. After running
such through our Bylaws and Platform Committees.....
relevant proposals will be included in a printed packet,
to be mailed to "probable" attendees at least a week
prior to the SQM. In other words, if you let me know
you WILL attend above meeting.......send your regular
mailing address with the "yes...I will attend" notice and
you'll get a meeting packet.....business items and
agenda...prior to the meeting. In that way, with atten-
dees having advance information, we hope
to conduct our business a bit more efficiently and max-
imize available time.
Now, individual members will still be able to submit
"new business" items AT the meeting proper, but only
the "advance" items will be printed in the packet, and
will receive priority consideration at the meeting.
WARNING: With the recent concealed weapons legisla-
tion now effective...July 1..... an alert, I guess, is necessary.
The Oak Club/Hall has a food & liquor license, and a public
facility serving such....... illegal to carry any concealed
weapons inside the building.....ILLEGAL!
So....IF YOU'RE ATTENDING, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
(Not to soon to commit!). If you're not attending,
please consider donating a few $$ to the cause...
the Green Party of Michigan needs it! And, give
us some idea if you'll be signing up for lunch buffet,
and for the Saturday night party... (pizza & beer&
soda&dancing/music....numbers needed for food
orders.
And, of course, any volunteer help will be welcomed
greatly! If you want to bring any pro-progressive, pro-
Green literature, from a favorite group you support, we
should have table space for such. But, let me know in
advance. Ditto any ideas for "special" events that'll
add some mix to the SQM.
One last thing...I promise. Time for Green Party re-
newals for a lot of our members. You'll be getting
notices from Dawn McClain in the mail....please
consider "re-upping" and get one or more of your
friends to join.
Thanks much.... hope to hear from all of you......
feel free to E-mail or call anytime.....especially
with ideas and suggestions......
