SPECIAL UPDATE: Nominating Convention, County Caucuses
===================================================
#1) Join / Renew Membership Immediately to Ensure Voting Rights
#2) August 3 & 4, 2002: GPMI Statewide Nominating Convention
#3) 06/19/02 County Caucuses: Kent, Muskegon & Ottawa Counties
#4) 07/13/02 County Caucuses: Genessee, Lapeer, Tuscola
#1) Join / Renew Membership Immediately to Ensure Voting Rights
from Pete Schermerhorn, Elections Coordinator, GPMI
(elections@migreens.org)
As Election Coordinator, I am urging everyone receiving this
message to renew their membership in the party, if lapsed, or
sign up for new membership, as there is a deadline looming.
"Membership in good standing" will be a requirement to be a
delegate at the Green Party of Michigan August 3 & 4 nominating
convention in Lansing (announcement to follow in a few days).
Others may attend, observe, and perhaps speak in limited
situations, but will not be able to participate in the nominating
process.
New members (those never belonging to the party) must have their
membership in by June 4 to qualify as a delegate (60 days before
the convention). Under the spirit of amnesty, those who have not
renewed in some time may do so without being considered 'new
members', but should do so as early as possible to aid in
workflow and credentialling processes.
If you are not able to get your membership in order by this
coming Tuesday, don't despair -- the Meeting Manager will be able
to give delegate status to those bringing new memberships or
renewals to the convention (but the earlier before the
convention, the better -- this might be seen as a 'good faith'
effort, attempting to get membership in on time).
We are going to be fielding more candidates that in 2000, and
have recently had a good deal of publicity. We will do our best
to keep the spotlight on us up to and through the convention,
which will make the convention a very interesting time.
This is how you can participate directly in democracy. Our party
requires only membership to participate in nominations at the
state level. Other parties require balloted elections for
delegates, and someday our party may have to do that as well,
when we're getting enough votes to be considered 'major.' This is
the best time to make your voice heard as a Green.
Membership may be registered at our website (www.migreens.org) or
directly by e-mail to info@migreens.org. Regular membership is
still $20, student, senior, and low income $5, and sustaining
$50. Dues waivers are available for the truly needy.

All three caucuses will also select delegates to represent them
at the state convention in Lansing to be held August 3-4, 2002.
There is no restriction on the number of delegates that any
caucus can send to the convention. If any of you are planning on
attending the state convention, please send an e-mail with your
name on it to matthewfouts@safe-mail.net, rebecca931@attbi.com or
politicog@yahoo.com, and indicate that you wish to be a delegate
for the state convention, along with your name, and the county
that you will be representing, so that we can place it on the
ballot for the caucus. Please make this known no later than
midnight June 3. All three caucuses will also be electing an
official county committee for the coming year. We would like to
see at least 3 people on the county committee for each county.
The county committee doesn't have much to do, but we would like
to have an "official" committee set up in each county.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To participate in the caucus, all that is required is that you be
a member of the Green Party of Michigan and live in the area
covered by the caucus. These qualifications are also all that is
required for delegates to the state convention and members of
county committees.
However, if you wish to run for one of the nominations, for all
offices you must be a U.S. citizen, a registered elector (voter)
in the State of Michigan, and live in the district that you are
seeking to represent. For some offices there are additional
constitutional or legal qualifications also, so please check with
your county clerk or the state Bureau of Elections to make sure
that you have the appropriate qualifications for the office that
you seek. If you do wish to run for one of the nominations,
please e-mail either matthewfouts@safe- mail.net,
rebecca931@attbi.com, or politicog@yahoo.com by midnight June 3.
The caucuses will also accept nominations from the floor.
Also, it has been decided that the caucus will accept ballots
send in by e- mail or snail mail, if we receive them by midnight
June 18. If you will not be able to attend the caucus, but would
like an e-mail ballot, please contact at the above e-mail
addresses and indicate that you would like one, and please let us
know for which county.
