(seeking Green Party nomination for 11th District U.S. House)
Bill Boyd was born in Detroit in 1968. His father was an accountant for the Ford Motor Company and moved his family to Canton in 1973. Bill attended public schools in the Plymouth Canton School District. He continues to live in Canton with his wife Kelly, a teacher at Farmington High School, and his two children Ryan (2) and Brandon (1).
Bill attended several colleges working up to three jobs at a time to pay for school. He graduated in 1991 from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in History and Political Science. Bill returned to school in 1992 to pursue a teaching certificate. In 1995 Bill was hired by the Plymouth Canto Community School District as a high school social studies teacher. Two years ago, he received his Master's Degree from The University of Michigan in Educational Technology.
Bill Boyd has spent the last seven years teaching government and economics at Salem High School in Canton. He was recognized as the Salem teacher of the year in 1997 and currently has been nominated as the Disney National Teacher of the Year. His Close Up program which brings students to Washington D.C. to study Government is the largest in the State and one of the largest in the world. Bill wants to bring that same amount of hard work and attention to excellence with him to the nations capital.
Bill decided to seek the Green Party nomination in 2002 after finally becoming tired of business as usual in government. Watching corporate scandals, environmental apathy, and the ignoring of the plight of the poor and elderly. He knows that the 11th district wants a candidate who puts people before corporate interests. Bill wants to stop urban sprawl, increase federal funding for public education, and reduce health costs for senior citizens. We face a crisis in our world today. We need a legislator who understands the ramifications of global pollution and illegal labor practices. Democrats and Republicans seem to want to pass token legislation during election years to satisfy their constituents and create the illusion that they care.
This election year presents a unique opportunity for the Green Party. In a district with no incumbent, the lead Democrat is relatively unknown. The lead Republican approved a 37% tax hike for lawmakers in Lansing during an economic downturn. People are tired of politics as usual. They are tired of career politicians. They are afraid for their families and pensions. They have had enough of Corporate America setting our policies and creating our laws. It is time for a change. Bill Boyd for Congress. It won't take and election year to do what's right.
